AAHA! Virginia · Community Weavers Initiative

100 for the 400

One hundred community protectors for African American cultural heritage, citizens who carried it without titles, without headlines, and handed it forward before anyone thought to ask.

The 400-year legacy of African American community in Virginia was built by ordinary people doing extraordinary things — quietly, consistently, without applause. This initiative names them. Seats are limited. Nominations are community-driven.

The Process

How It Works

1. You submit a nomination below

Complete the form below with your information and the name of the person you are nominating. Tell us who they are and what work they have done in service to the community. Your nominee does not need to be present at the Symposium to be entered in the vault. Self-nominations are not accepted.

2. Your nominee receives an email

As soon as you submit, an email goes directly to the person you nominated. It explains what 100 for the 400 is, that someone in their community put their name forward, and what happens next. Your identity remains confidential unless you’ve shared it.

3. Your nominee completes and submits their profile.

Upon seat confirmation, there is a $175 inductee acceptance fee. The process takes less than five minutes. They choose whether to participate, no pressure, no obligation.

4. AAHA! Virginia names the initiative, convenes the community, and holds the parameters.

Once confirmed, your nominee is recognized as a Community Weaver. The inductee community forms its own governance by consensus. They receive a seat at our symposium, recognition in AAHA! Virginia publications, and a place in the permanent record of Virginia’s African American heritage story.
